Transparency:
In addition to promoting good and thought-provoking design work, the Spontaneous Architecture project seeks to do so in the spirit of participation, accessibility, and democracy. A cornerstone of achieving that goal is providing transparency throughout the process, especially where the competitions are concerned. Below is a description and explanation of the finances of the competition. Any other questions you may have regarding the operations of Spontaneous Architecture are welcomed at info@spontaneousarchitecture.net.
The Money
Spontaneous Architecture is funded by the entry fees of the competition. Fifty (50) percent of the monthly fees are distributed to the winner(s) of that month's competition. The remaining fifty (50) percent fund the project.
The costs covered include administrative costs, the overhead costs of the website, payment to the programmers who ensure the competition operates online without a hitch, and any production and printing costs required by the monthly RAPID RESPONSE event at Studio-X. Some of these costs are not fixed, but rather increase with the number of competition submissions.
In the event that any funds still remain after the month's expenses are paid, they are channeled into the Spontaneous Architecture installation project. This allows for minimal (if any) out-of-pocket expense for installation participants while also providing for the installation space and materials.
